Game Summary By Ed Greif
The Oneida Indians scored two second-half
touchdowns to defeat the Rockwood Tigers
14-7 in region action Friday night at Tom
Pemberton Stadium.
The Indians took the opening kickoff at
their 39-yard line after a nice kickoff
return by dJohnny Manis. Two running plays
by Bryson Buttram gave the Indians a first
down at the Rockwood 22-yard line, but he
fumbled when tackled by John Metcalfe, with
Jai Worthy recovering for the Tigers. After
an incomplete pass by Nate Bracket, Taj
Bazel carried three times for 37 yards,
including a 27-yard run for the go-ahead TD
with 9:14 left in the first quarter. Bracket
passed 41 yards to Dylan Williams for a big
first down. Ben Woodall's PAT made it 7-0.
Rockwood had two more possessions in the
first quarter, going three plays and out
both times, to finish the frame with 31
yards rushing on 7 carrie and 2-of-4 passes
for 48 yards. Oneida finished the first
quarter with 67 yards on 11 carries and
continued their offensive prowess in the
second quarter, 32 yards on 8 carries for 97
yards on 19 carries for the half. Rockwood
finished the half with 52 yards rushing on
15 carries and 73 yards passing on 3-of-6
passes with just three first downs.
Rockwood's first possession of the second
half went three and out, giving the ball to
the Indians at their 33-yard line.They drove
the distance in 11 plays to score on a
30-yard pass from Elijah West to Trace
Sexton, The PAT made it 7-7 with 3:24 left
in the third quarter. Again, it was another
three and out for the Tigers, giving the
ball to the Indians at the Tigers' 43-yard
line, but the Tigers' defense forced three
plays and out. The defense was led by John
Gann and Gavin Evans.
Rockwood picked up a first down on three
plays, but two incomplete passes killed the
drive. Oneida took over at the Rockwood
47-yard line, scoring three plays later on
Kolby Morgan's 3-yard run with 8:37 left in
the game. The PAT made it 14-7. The Tigers'
ensuing possession moved the ball on the
running of Williams, Bazel and Octavious
Worthy, but the drive stalled on two
incomplete passes and two tackles for minus
yards. Oneida took over at their 22-yard
line and ran out the clock on the running of
Morgan and West.
Rockwood rushed for 106 yards on 29 carries
and competed 5-of-12 passes for 78 yards,
while Oneida rushed for 2017 yards on 42
carries and compled 2-of-5 passes for 33
yards, Williams led Rockwood with 64 yards
on 11 carries and had 1 catch for 41 yards.
Metcalfe was the leading tackler with four
solos, while Evans, Bazel and Bracket each
had three tackles.
