Game Summary By Ed Greif

The Meigs County Tigers scored 42 unanswered points to defeat the Rockwood Tigers 42-7 last Friday on Civitan Field, extending Rockwood's losing streak to four games and giving Coach John Webb's squad their first region loss for 2019.

Rockwood's first possession was three plays and out, giving unbeaten Meigs the ball at their 5-yard line. Meigs County quarterback Aarron Swafford and running back Will Meadows did all of the damage in the drive, carrying the ball seven times for 38 yards, but Rockwood's defense led by Dillon Garrett, Dakota Waldo, Abe Gaskins, Nate Brackett, Jack Alexander and Michaiah Storey held them off and forced a punt.

Rockwood's possession was three plays and out, but Alexander picked off a third down pass by Swafford to kill the drive.

Rockwood took over at the Meigs County 29-yard line. Three plays later, Waldo scored from the 7-yard line for a 6-0 lead with 1:26 left in the first quarter. Ben Woodall's PAT was good for the 7-0 advantage. After that, it was all Meigs County, as the visiting Tigers from Decatur scored 27 unanswered points to take a 27-7 lead at the half.

Swafford scored Meigs' first TD on a 14-yard run to cap a six play, 62-yard drive with 11:46 left in the half. He booted the PAT for the 7-7 tie. After another three and out by Rockwood, Meigs County drove 77 yards in five plays to take a 13-7 lead on Meadows' 31-yard run. Swaffford had a 31-yard run to set up the score. Xadrian Fickey blocked Swafford's PAT. Meigs County extended the lead to 21-7 on a 58-yard by Swafford with 3:15 left in the half to ca[ the 4-play, 67-yard drive.

Garrett returned the ensuing kick 22 yards, with Waldo picking up a first down on a 12-yard carry and Brackett passing 13-yards to Garrett. After Gaskins was stopped for a 12-yard loss, Brackett was picked off by Swafford for an 82-yard interception return to give the visitors a 27-7 advantage; however, the PAT was no good with 25.5 ticks left in the half. Rockwood ran one play to end the first half.

Rockwood rushed for 26 yards on 14 carries and completed 2-of-8 passes for 27 yards with just four first downs, while Meigs County rushed for 229 yards on 18 carries and 0-2 passing with the one interception by Alexander. Swafford had 177-yards rushing on 10 carries, while Meadows added 87 yards on nine rushes.

Meadows returned second-half kick 14 yards, but two incomplete passes killed the drive, forcing the first punt by Meigs County. Rockwood took over, but, again, went three plays and out, giving the ball right back to the visitors.

Megis County drove 64 yards in eight plays to take a 33-7 lead on Meadows' 4-yard run with 5:11 left in the third quarter. Swafford passed to Jackson Fritts for the 2-point conversion for the 35-7 lead. Rockwood mounted non offense in their next possession and was forced to punt.

Meigs County took over at their 15-yard line, capping the drive with a 32-yard run by Fritts with 10:14 left in the game for a 41-7 lead. At some point during the play, a personal foul was charged. The officials indicated it was against Meigs County to be marked off on the kickoff after the PAT was converted; however, it was marked off against the Tigers to the dismay of the Rockwood fans.

Pudge Hannidal returned the kickoff 21 yards, but the Tigers were held to three plays and out. Meigs County used five more running backs to kill the clock on their fifth victory.

Rockwood finished the game with 60 total yards (33 rushing and 27 passing) with five first downs. Brackett had another outstanding game punting, booming six for 256 yards or 42.6 per kick. Meigs County had 463 yards total offense (437 rushing and 26 passing) with 21 first downs. Meadows rushed for 121 yards on 18 carries, while Swafford had 192 yards on 15 carries.

Rockwood travels to Harriman Sept. 27 for the 100th-renewal for their long rivalry. Both teams carry 1-4 rrecords onto Wallace-Black Field for the 7:30 p.m. game.
