Rockwood Falls to Meigs County 48-27

The Rockwood Tigers hosted region foe Meigs County at Tom Pemberton Stadium Friday night, as the Tigers from Decatur posted a 48-27 victory.

After exchanging positions to open the game, Meigs County took over at their 20-yard line and marched the distance in 11 plays to take a 6-0 advantage with 2:32 left in the first quarter on a 13-yard pass from Aaron Swafford to Jon Jon Beeler. The PAT was no good.

A 14-yard kickoff return by Zander Price gave Rockwood the ball at their 29-yard line, moving the ball into Meigs County territory on the running of Joe Ashbury, Price and Ryan McCain as the first quarter came to a close. Rockwood rushed for 38 yards on seven carries, while Nate Brackett completed 2-of-2 passes for 20 yards - a 9-yarder to Price and an 11-yarder to Dylan Williams.

RHS ran two plays before punting to open the second quarter. Meigs County took over at their 16-yard line, but were stopped on downs at their 25-yard line. Rockwood used the running of Ashburn, Brackett and McCain to tie the game a 6-6 on McCain’s 15-yard TD run with 6:15 left in the half. Trey Treadway’s PAT made it 7-6. The trio picked up 25 yards rushing in the possession.

Miens County took the ensuing possession at their 39, but three plays, Swafford fumbled with Jequerian Worthy recovering at the Meigs County 31. Three plays later McCain scored on a 10-yard run to give RHS a 13-6 advantage with 3:29 left in the half. Treadway’s PAT was good for the 8-point lead.

After an exchange of possessions, Meigs County took over at the Tiger 46-yard line after a Treadwaty 33-yard punt. Swafford capped the 4-play drive with a 13-yard TD run and then added the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14 with 17.6 seconds left in the half.

Rockwood took the second-half kick at their 12-yard line, but went three plays and out, giving the ball to the visitors at the RHS 32-yard line. Swafford weaved his way through the Rockwood defense for a TD to give his team a 20-14 lead and added the PAT for a 21-14 advantage with 9:59 left in the third quarter. Meigs County recovered the onside kick at the Rockwood 38-yard line. Swafford raced 22 yards for a 27-14 lead and then booted the PAT for his team’s 28 points with 9:33 left in the quarter.

Rocked took over at their 44, ran four running plays - two each by Price and Ashburn - to pick up 24 yards and a first down; however, Brackett threw two imcompletions, turning the ball over on downs to Meigs county at the MCHS 32-yard line. Two plays later, Swafford ran 54 yards for a TD and booted the PAT for a 35-14 lead with 6:41 left in the third stanza.

Meigs County recovered the onside kick at the Rockwood 44 and used the running of Martin Smith (eight carries for 26 yards) to move the ball deeper into Rockwood territory. Swafford capped the drive with a 12-yard pass to Austin Judd. The PAT made it 42-14 with 1:05 left in the stanza. Price and Worthy had tackles for minus yardage. Price returned the ensuing kick 37 yards to the Meigs County 47, where his team run two plays to end the third quarter, where Rockwood only ran 11-offensive plays and had one punt.

Six plays later, Brackett passed five yards to Price with 8:47 left in the game for a TD. Treadway booted the PAT to slice the score to 42-21. Meigs County took the ensuing kick at their 40 and drove the distance in nine plays, scoring on a 20-yard pass from Swafford to Juvan Martin for a 48-21 lead with 2:11 left in the game. The PAT was no good. Swafford completed 3-of-3 passes for 46 yards. Smith, Ricky Bunch, Swafford and Jackson Fritts carried the ball for Rockwood.

Rockwood took the ensuing kick at their 35 and went the distance in three plays to score on Price’s 35-yard run with 1:29 left in the game. Price had a 15-yard scamper to set up the TD. A 15-yard penalty on Meigs County aided the drive. The 2-point conversion was no-good. Meigs County went into the victory formation for the final 1:29 of the game. Rockwood travels to Harriman Thursday night.
