Game Summary By Ed Greif
The Kingston Yellow Jackets scored 21 second
half points to defeat the Rockwood Tigers
21-14 in a non-region contest on Dr. Nat
Sugarman Field in Kingston Friday night. The
Tigers led 14-0 at the half, but the Yellow
Jackets scored 14 points in the third
quarter to tie the game at 14-14, and took
the lead on Jake Tipton's fourth-quarter run
and Marcus Bunch's third PAT.
Kingston took the opening kick used the
running of Nathan Jones, Elijah Hill, Cam
Hill and Bradley Keathley, picking up 88
yards on 18 carries, including 33 yards by
Keathley, before Tiger senior Jonathan Gann
recovered a fumble at their 8-yard line.
Ryan Nelson, Octavious Worthy, Dillon
Garrett, David Collett, John Metcalfe, Dade
Turner, Dylan Williams and Gavin Evans also
made key stops.
A halfback pass by Taz Bazel was picked off
by Elijah Reeder and a penalty on Rockwood
pick the football at the Tiger 5-yard line;
however, Rockwood recorded three tackles for
minus 11 yards and an intercpetion by Bazel
at the Tiger 1-yard line stopped the second
Yellow Jacket march.
A 42-yard pass from Nate Bracket to Bazel
got the Tigers out of the hole. Four running
plays picked up 30 yards to put the pigskin
at their Kingston 20 as the first quarter
ended. Rockwood finished the first quarater
with 21 yards rushing on eight carries and
was 1-of--2 passing for 42 yards with just
two first downs, while Kingston rushed for
77 yards on 21 carries with five first
downs.
Five p lays later, Bazel raced 12 yards to
give Rockwood a 6-0 lead with 9:23 left in
the half. Ben Woodall booted the PAT for a
7-0 advantage. Marcus Rose returned the
ensuing kick to the Kingston 34, but the
Tiger defense forced a 3-and-out.
The Tigers used the running of Bazel,
Bracket and Williams to move the ball for
their second TD, a 7-yard pass from Bracket
to Williams with 1:55 left in the half for a
13-0 lead . Woodall's kick made it 14-0.
Ruckwood rushed for 42 yards on 10 carries.
Another 14-yard KOR by Rose gave the Yellow
Jackets the ball at their 38-yard line. Trey
Shultz replaced Tipton at quarterback and
completed 2-of-5 passes for 28 yards, before
Turner picked off his sixth attempt to
thwart the drive. Keathley had one carry for
22 yards. Bazel picked up three yards to
kill the clock in the first half, with his
team leading 14-0. Rockwood rushed for 71
yards in the fist half on 16 carries, led by
Bazel's 51 yards on nine carries. Brackett
was 1-of-2 passing for seven yards.
Bazel's 17-yard KOR put the ball at the
Tiger 27, but the drive was stopped on downs
at the Kingston 36-yard line. Bracket
compled 2-of-2 passes for 16 yards, one
8-yard pass each to Worthy and Bazel. Two
plays later, Elijah Hill exploded for 61
yards for the Yellow Jackets' first score
with 7:23 left in the third quarter. Bunch
converted the PAT to make the score 14-7.
After the Tigers turned the ball over on a
fumble by Turner at their 18-yard line,
Tipton passed 15 yards to Reeder to cap the
7-play drive with 2:22 left in the third
quarter. Bunch converted the PAT to tie the
game at 14-14. Turner's short kickoff return
gave the Tigers the ball at their 13. Three
plays, including a 38-yard pass from Bazel
to Turner who made a great catch, to put the
ball at the Kingston 45 as the third quarter
ended.
Three plays later, the drive was stopped on
downs at the Kingston 49. Kingston rushed
the running of Jones, Elijah and Cam Hill
and Keathley to set up Tipton's 1-yard run
with 6:58 left in the game. Bunch's PAT made
it 21-14. Rockwood's next possession went
three plays and out.
Again, Kingston returned to their running
game to move the ball into Rockwood Tiger,
ended on a tackle for minus six yards by
Williams. After a punt return and a penalty,
Rockwood took over at their 30, but a loss
for minus five yards and 2-of-6 passes by
Bracket for 18 yards put the ball at the
Rockwood 43. Bracket carried the ball three
times for 29, yards, but a couple penalties
back the Tigers up and then Rose's 35-yard
interception return ended the game.
Rockwood rushed for 143 yards on 38 carries
and completed 9-of-19 passes for 92 yards
with two interceptions. Bazel rushed for 73
yards ib 14 carries and caught five passes
for 35 yards, while Bracket rushed 44 yards
on 11 carries.
Garrett was the leading tackler with five
solos and three assists, while Metcalfe had
four solos and two assists. Also
contributing were Nelson, O. Worthy, Gann,
Collett, Turner, Williams, Bracket, Evans,
Jai Worthy, Austin Quick, Bazel, Dom Sompson
and Abe Gaskin. Rockwood travels to Meigs
County this week.
