Kingston defeats Rockwood 49-28

The Rockwood Tigers returned to Tom Pemberton Stadium Friday night to face county rival Kingston, but the Yellow Jackets stung the Tigers 49-28 before a capacity crowd.

Kingston scored on its first possession of the game, driving 73-yards in seven plays to score on Matt Spellman’s 23-yard run with 8:33 remaining the quarter. Marcus Bunch’s PAT made it 7-0. Wesley Vann, Nathan Jones, Spellman, Brandon Plemens and Brandon Keathley carried the ball. After a couple of possession changes, the Tigers took over at their 41-yard line. On the first play, Nate Brackett passed 41-yards to Trey Treadway with 2:48 left in the quarter. Treadway booted the PAT to tie the game at 7-7.

Kingston took over at their 33 after the Tiger kickoff, but the Tigers held the Yellow Jackets to three plays and out. The Tigers took over at their 22, but two plays later, Jones picked off Brackett for a 20-yard TD. Bunch’s PAT made it 14-7 with 13.2 seconds left in the quarter.

Ashburn returned the ensuing kick 22 yards to the Tiger 37-yard line, but the Tigers’ possession ended in three plays and out. The Yellow Jackets took over at their 16-yard line and drove the distance in three plays to score on a 61-yard pass from Plemens to Elijah Reeder with 9:56 left in the half. Bunch’s kick made 21-7.

Ashburn returned the ensuing kick 17 yards to the Tiger 27-yard line. Seven plays later, Brackett passed 50 yards to Treadway for the score. Treadway’s PAT made it 21-14 with 5:52 left in the half. Ryan McCain, Asburn, Kaleb Garrett, Brackett and Zander Price carried the ball six times for 23 yards to set up the TD pass.

The Tigers forced a Kingston punt and took over at their 31-yard line, but two plays later, Brackett fumbled at the Rockwood 40. Tyler Thurman recovered for the Yellow Jackets. Kingston scored four plays later on a Jones’ 4-yard run with 1:47 left in the half. Bunch’s PAT made it 28-14.

Ashburn returned the ensuing kick 16 yards to the Tiger 21-yard line. The Tigers picked up three first downs on five running plays for 39 yards on carries by Brackett, McCain, Price and Ashbury and two passes for nine yards from Brackett to Price; however, the half ended on three incomplete passes.

Ashburn thrilled the Tiger faithful by returning the second half kick 90 yards for a TD with 11:44 left in the third quarter. Treadway booted the PAT to make the score 28-21. The Tiger defense held Kingston to three plays and out, taking over at the Kingston 37 on Ashbury’s 13-yard punt return; however, Ashburn fumbled after a 6-yard run to the Kingston 14, where Quinn Nolan recovering.

Kingston then drove the distance in six plays to score on a 61-yard pass from Plemens to Spellman with 5:55 left in the third quarter. Bunch’s PAT made it 35-21. After a exchange of possessions, the Yellow Jackets drove 75 yards in 10 plays to score on a 32-yard run by Jones with 11:50 left in the game. Bunch’s PAT made it 42-21. Keathley carried the ball five times for 28 yards to lead Kingston.

Rockwood’s ensuing possession went three plays and out, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball at the Kingston 25. Elijah Hill capped the 7-play drive with a 23-yard run, after six rushes by Keathley, Spellman and Jones. Bunch’s PAT made it 49-21 with 6:59 left in the game. Ashburn returned the ensuing kick 24 yards to the Rockwood 39-yard line. Eight plays later, Garrett scored on an 11-yard run with 2:56 left in the game. Brackets passed 14 yards to Treadway to set up the run. Price, Tre Falls and Brackett picked up 36 yards on six carries.

Kingston ran five plays to kill the clock. Brackett completed 6-of-15 passes for 126 yards with two TDs and one interception and rushed for 18 yards on five carries. Treadway caught three passes for 105 yards, and Price had three possessions for 21 yards and 62 yards rushing on 11 carries. Ashburn rushed for 34 yards on eight attempts and returned six kicks for 162 yards with one touchdown.
