Kingston’s 13-game losing streak is over and it ended in dramatic fashion Friday night as Brian Pankey’s squad score three touchdowns in the final 8:49 of the game to knock off Rockwood, 28-21, at Dr. Nat Sugarman Memorial Field.

Kingston’s victory came thanks to an incredible fourth quarter rally. The Jackets trailed 21-7 entering the final period, but scored on all three possessions in the final period. The final drive was capped by a 30-yard screen pass from Paul Bolden to Rhett Jones with 35.8 seconds remaining.

For Rockwood (3-1), Friday’s victory was hard to swallow considering the Tigers never trailed until the final minute of the game.

“We let one slip away from us tonight,” Tiger Head Coach John Webb said. “They battled to the end and I’m not sure that we did. That’s hard to take because we’re a team that prides itself in being a fourth quarter team.”

Rockwood took the lead Friday by scoring on its first possession of the game. The Tigers marched 68 yards in eight plays with Drake Long scoring on a fourth-and-three run of 30 yards.

Trey Treadway added the PAT to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 6:09 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers nearly had a chance to deliver an early haymaker when they recovered a Kingston fumble at the Jacket 25-yard line three plays later. Rockwood would drive to the Kingston 10 before running out of downs.

Kingston didn’t stay there long as the Jackets used a trick play to find the end zone. Bolden threw a backward pass to Mitchell, and then Mitchell fired a strike down field to a wide open Preston Edmonds for what was a 67-yard touchdown. Gabe Shillings added the PAT to tie the score at 7-7 with 50.4 seconds left in the first quarter.

Kingston threatened to take the lead on its next possession. Starting from its own 29, the Jackets drove to the Tiger 21-yard line before Dallas Strader sacked Bolden on fourth down to end the drive.

Rockwood regained the lead with a quick scoring drive on its final possession of the opening half. The Tigers drove 70 yards in five plays with Long sprinting into the end zone from 12 yards out to make the score 14-7 with 1:13 left until halftime.

The third quarter flew by. The period opened with both teams going three-and-out before the Tigers put together a 12-play, 58-yard scoring drive capped off by a 1-yard run from Long to take a seemingly safe 21-7 lead with 42.7 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Long accounted for 55 of the 58 yards in the drive.

Down but not out, Kingston answered with an 11-play, 51-yard drive that ended in Bolden throwing an 11-yard TD pass to Brett Plemens with 8:49 left to make the score 21-14.

Kingston’s defense then forced a three-and-out, and that’s when Pankey reached back into his bag of tricks.

With Edmonds at quarterback, the Jackets ran a reverse to Bolden, who fired a long pass to an open Riley Adcock for a 44-yard gain. Jones scored from 21 yards out on the next play to cap a 2-play, 65-yard drive and tie the score at 21 with 6:07 left to play.

After another three-and-out, Kingston took over at its own 35 with 3:58 left to play. Eight plays later, Jones ended Kingston’s losing streak when he dove into the end zone to put the Jackets on top, 28-21.

Rockwood will face district foe Meigs County this Friday at Civitan Field.
