Game Recap By Ed Greif
The Rockwood Tigers scored two first quarter
touchdowns, one on offense and the other on
special teams, to defeat the Tellico Plains
Bears 14-6 to improve their record to 2-1
last Friday night at Civiitan Field. Taz
Bazel scored both touchdowns - the first on
a 5-yard run to cap a 12-play, 52-yard drive
and on an 83-yard punt return. Ben Woodall
booted both PATs.
Octavious Worthy returned the opening
kickoff 18-yards to the Rockwood 48-yard
line.Three carries by Dylan Williams for 5
yards and a 7-yard pass from Nate Bracket to
Bazel gput the pigskin at the Bear 40-yard
line. Brackett then scampered 40 yards for
the touchdown, but the Tigers were penalized
for a block in the back, putting the ball at
the Bear 34. Seven plays later, Bazel scored
the from the 5-yard line. A 10-yard run by
William set up the scoring run.
A nice kickoff return by Blake Burgess gave
the Bears the ball at their 47-yard line. A
second down pass from Dale Rhinehart to Levi
Roberts for 14 yards gave the Bears a
first-down, but the Tigers defense led by
Anthony Bell, Octavious Worthy, Gavin
Evands, Williams and Dade Turner. forced a
punt.. Bazel fielded the punt and returned
it for a touchdown for the 13-0 lead.
Woodall's PAT made it 14-0. The Tiger
defense forced a three and out on the
ensuing series by the Bears.
Rockwood took over and moved the ball on the
ground, before being stopped on downs at the
Bear 12-yard line. Octavious Worthy, Bazel
and Williams toted the ball 7 times for 50
yards, before an incomplete pass by Brackett
ended the threat. A couple of penalties also
hurt the drive.
The Bears took over and used a 17-play drive
on the running of Burgess, Roberts and
Rhinehart, but the Tiger defense led by
Bell, Jonahtnan Gann, Dalton Moss, Bracket,
Michaiah Story, Williams, Octavious Worthy
and Evans slowed the drive. Bracket used a
quarterback sneak to end the half.
Rockwood rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries
and completed 3-of-6 passes for 22 yards
with 6 first downs, while Tellico Plains
rushed for 69 yards on 19 carries and
completed 4-of-7 passes for 40 yards with 7
first downs.
Tellico Plains took the second half at their
22 after a nice return by Marshall Dukes.
Rhinehart passed 7 yards to Cooper fo cap
the 7-play drive. The PAT was no good with
7:41 left in the third quarter.
Rockwood took the ensuing kick at their 24
and used a mixture of running and passing to
kill the clock..Bazel, Worthy and Williams
did the bulk of the running, while Bracket
completed two passes for 14 yards to Bazel.
The drive stalled on downs at the Bear 26.
Tellico Plains had three possessions in the
fourth quarter, rushing for six yards on 5
carries and completed 5-of-10 passes for 44
yards with three first downs, while the
Tigers had 4 yards ruhin on 6 carries and 15
yards passin on 1-of-4 passes with zero
first downs.
The Tigers rushed for 98 yards on 28 carries
with one touchdown. Worthy was the leading
rusher with 49 yards on 11 carries, while
Bazel had 30 yards on 5 carries, before
leaving the game with an injury late in the
fourth quarter.Williams added 26 yards on 6
rushers.
Brackett completed 6-of-12 passes for 54
yards, including 5 to Bazel for 39 yards.
Abe Gaskins caught one ball for 15 yards
Bracket was the leading tackler with six
solos, one assist and two pass breakups,
while Bell added four solos with two pass
breakups. Gann had four solos and one
assist, while Metcalfe had three solos and
one assist. Also, contribuing were Worthy,
Evans, Williams, Gaskins, Story, Moss, David
Collett, Ryan Nelson, Jai Worthy, Bazel,
Austin Quick and Hayden Jones. The defense
recorded 7 tackles for minus 17 yards.
“This was a huge win against a very good
team and although we didn’t play our best,
we never gave up and fought hard,” stated
Rockwood coach John Webb.
The Tigers travel to 0-3 Kingston this
Friday, after the Yellow Jackets were beaten
by Austin-East.
