Game Summary By Ed Greif
Thurman Billingsley returned a Nate Brackett
pass 10 yards for the go-ahead touchdown to
rally the Sweetwater Wildcats to a 13-12
victory over the Rockwood Tigers in
Sweetwater Friday night.
Sweetwater opened the game at their 32-yard
line, but three plays later, Dillon Garrett
picked off a Austin Long pass at the goal
line and returned it 20 yards for the
Tigers; however the Tigers were held to
three plays and out.
The Wildcats used the running of Long, Drew
Hicks and Jerod Arnett and the passing of
long to move the ball into Tiger territory,
but the RHS defense on downs at the Tiger
34. Gavin Evans, Brackett, Octavious Worthy
and Abe Gaskins led the defensive charge for
the Tigers.
Rockwood used the running of Worthy, Dakota
Waldo and Jayden Hannibal and a 18-yard pass
from Brackett to Owen Hyle into Wildcat
terrirtory as the scoreless first quarter
ended.
On the first play of the second quarter,
Waldo raced 22 yards for the go-ahead score,
but Ben Woodall;s PAT was no good.
Sweetwater took the ensuing kick at their
25-yard line and marched the distance in
eight plays to tie the game at 6-6 with 7:36
left in the half. Long completed two passes
for 27 yards, while the 'Cats picked up 31
yards rushing on five carries. A personal
foul penalty on the Tigers kept the drive
alive. The PAT by Ben Brackett gave
Sweetwater a 7-6 lead.
Hyle returned the ensuing kick 17 yards to
the Tiger 27-yard line. Brackett hit Garrett
21-yards for a crucial first down to open
the drive. Two running plays by Worthy and
Waldo picked up 13 yards before Brackett hit
Hyle for 11 yards to put the Tigers deep
into Wildcat territory.
More running by Worthy, Jayden Hannibal and
Waldo added nine yards, setting up
Brackett's 15-yard pass to Waldo for
first-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Jayden
Hanniball scored from the one for a 12-7
advance with 44.3 seconds left in the half.
The two-point conversion was snuffed out by
the Sweetwater defense..
Sweetwater recovered the Tigers's onside
kick at their 39. Long then passed 19 yards
to Simon Blomstrom for a first down at the
Tiger 42. Two running plays netted 21 yards
to the Rockwood 21-yard line with three
seconds left in the half, by 38-yard field
goal was just short as the half ended.
Rockwood rushed for 87 yards on 17 carries
and completed 4-of-6 passes 65 yards with
just six first downs, while Sweetwater
rushed for 78 yards on 15 carries and
completed 5-of-8 passes for 107 yards with
one pick by Garrett.
The Tiger's first second-half possession
went three plays and out, giving the ball
back to the 'Cats at their 12-yard line, bu
the RHS defense led by Garrett, Brackett and
Josiah Gilbert forced a punt.
On third and long from the Wildcat 46,
Brackett rolled to his left and threw to
Worthy near the goal line, but the ball
slipped threw his arms, forcing a punt.
Brackett's punt pinned the 'Cats at their
7-yard line. The passing of Long helped the
Wildcats move the ball to the Wildcat 48 as
the third quarter ended.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, a
Sweetwater punt put the Tigers at their 12.
Waldo was stopped for a one-yard loss, but a
penalty on the Tigers, put the ball at their
6-yard line. A third-down pass from Brackett
was picked off by Billingsley for a 10-yard
TD; however, the PAT was no good.
A 29-yard kickoff return by Jayden Hannibal
put the ball at the Tiger 34-yard line, but
Worthy fumbled on the first carry, giving
the ball back to the Wildcats. Sweetwater
used a mixture of running and passing moved
the ball deep into Tiger territory, before
being stopped on downs by the Tiger defense,
led by Evans, Waldo and Jack Alexander.
The Tigers were held to three plays and out.
Hicks picked up 35 yards on seven carries,
but the 'Cats closed out the game in their
victory formation to take the 13-12 victory.
The Tigers rushed for 66 yards on 26 carries
and completed 6-of-13 passes for 81 yards
with one interception, while the Wildcats
rushed for 153 yards on 33 carries and
completed 8-of-17 passes for 113 yards with
one PIC.
Brackett punted four times for 43.25 per
kick. Waldo was the leading rusher with 35
yards on 11 carries and caught one pass for
15 yards. Garrett had two catches for 30
yards, and Hyle had two catches for 29 and
two kickoff returns for 46 yards.
The Tigers host Oliver Springs this Friday.
