The Rockwood Tigers made their first of two
trips into Monroe County last Friday,
dropping a 27-18 decision to the Sweetwater
Wildcats and take their 1-1 record to
Tellico Plains next Friday. The Wildcats led
17-0 at the half, but fought off a
second-half rally by the Tigers to post the
victory.
Rockwood had two possessions in the first
quarter, picking up 28 yards rushing on 10
carries, with Joe Ashburn picking up 22
yards on three carries. Nate Brackett
completed 1-of-3 passes for six yards. Trey
Treadway had the 6-yard class.
Sweetwater scored on their second possession
of the quarter on a 12-yard run by Ethan
Holley with 1:08 remaining. Khayman King
booted the PAT for the 7-0 lead. The ‘Cats
picked 25 yards on seven carries and 13
yards on 3-of-3 passes.
Zander Price thrilled the Tiger faithful by
returning the ensuing kick 65 yards to the
Wildcat 20-yard line, but went three plays
and out, as Treadway missed a 33-yard field
goal with 11:45 left in the second quarter.
The Tigers’ defense led by Jonathan Gann and
Tristan Tinker stopped the Wildcat drive and
forced a punt, which was returned 19 yards
by Price; however, the Tigers were stopped
on downs at the Tiger 37-yard line.
Sweetwater then drove the distance in four
plays to score on a 9-yard run Holley with
7:20 left in the half for the 13-0 lead. The
PAT made it 14-0. Joe Ashburn returned the
ensuing kick 19 yards, but the forced three
plays and out.
Two plays later from the Tiger 45, Ashburn
picked off Sweetwater quarterback Riley
Turpeinen, but, again, the Tiger offense was
forced to three plays and out.
Sweetwater took the ball at their 21-yard
line and drove into Rockwood territory,
where King booted a 33-yard field goal for a
17-0 lead with 27.5 seconds left in the
half. Ryan McCain returned the ensuing kick
15 yards, but McCain’s halfback pass was
intercepted by Matthew Kile.
Sweetwater mishandled the second half kick,
recovered by Ashburn at the Wildcat 30-yard
line. Brackett passed 25 yards to Treadway
to the 5-yard line, while Caleb Bowen
powered his way into the end zone with 11:27
left in the quarter to slice the lead to
17-6. Treadway’s PAT was no good. The fired
up Tiger defense stopped the Wildcat to
three plays and out, but the Wildcats forced
another Tiger punt.
Sweetwater took over at their 30, but the
Tiger defense led by Kaleb Garrett an Hayden
Johnson stopped the Wildcats into a 26-yard
punt. After a change of possessions, the
Tigers took over at the Wildcat 34 and
scored four plays later on McCain’s 8-yard
run with 10:13 left in the game. The
two-point conversion failed.
Sweetwater took the ensuing kick at their 40
and drove the distance in scored on a
23-yard field for a 20-12 advantage. Gann,
Garrett, Dalton Moss, Ashbury, John Metcalfe
and Shawn McNallie led the Tiger defense.
Tracy Treadway then exploded through the
Wildcat defense with a 72 yard kickoff
return to the Wildcat 13. Two plays later,
Brackett scored from five yards to make the
score 20-18, but the two-point conversion
failed with 4:42 left in the game.
Sweetwater drove 65 yards on seven plays to
take a 26-18 lead on Drew Hicks’ 19-yard
run. The PAT made it 27-18. Rockwood ran
three plays to end the game.
