“The Price was Right” for the Rockwood Tigers Friday night, as senior Zander Price picked off a pass by Midway quarterback Jason Taylor to preserve his team’s 41-40 victory over Green Wave in the season opener for both schools on Civitan Field.

Midway was driving for the potential winning score in the final three minutes of the game, after holding the Tigers to three plays and out. Price returned Taylor’s pass to the Midway 4-yard line, but a holding penalty put the ball pack at the Tiger 36-yard line. Rockwood ran three running plays to end the game for their first victory of the season.

Rockwood scored on its first possession of the game, driving 52 yards in nine plays to score on Nate Brackett’s one-yard run with 8:34 left in the first quarter. Trey Treadway’s PAT made it 7-0.

Midway’s first possession ended with a 30-yard punt by Hunter Mims. Price fielded the ball at the Tiger 44-yard line.

Tiger then drove 56 yards in 10 plays, capped by Caleb Bowen’s 6-yard run, but the PAT was no-good. Brackets completed two pass for 24 yards, a 13-yarder to Treadway and an 11-yarder to Dylan Williams for the 13-0 advantage with 2:05 left in the first quarter.

Midway answered with a 15-play, 73-yard drive, capped Taylor’s 6-yard pass to Hunter Hester early in the second quarter. Taylor completed 8-of-10 passes for 43 yards to Robert Schommer, Zane Moser, Mims and Hester. Gilbert Valarde booted the PAT.

Joe Asburn returned the ensuing kick to the Tiger 36, where the Tigers drove the distance in nine plays, capped on Brackets’ 15-yard pass to Ryan McCain with 3:35 left in the half for a 19-7 lead. The 2-point conversion was no good.

Asburn, Carter Barnes, Bowen and Price carried the pigskin eight times for 68 yards.

Midway took the ensuing kick at their 42 and drove the distance in eight plays, capped by Taylor’s 23-yard pass to Moser with 57.3 left in the half. Taylor was 5-of-7 passing for 69 yards. Kaleb Garrett blocked the PAT to make the score 19-13.

The Tigers drove 48 yards in three plays to take a 27-13 advantage at the half, as Brackett passed 11 yards to Price with 19.7 left in the half. He was 3-of-3 passes for 48 yards and scored the 2-point conversion for the 27-13 lead.

Midway took the ensuing kick at their 42, but Price was in the right spot at the right time as picked off a Green Wave pass as the first half ended.

The Green Wave started the second half by driving 65 yards in seven plays to score on Taylor’s 12-yard pass to C.J. Huff with 11:08 left in the third quarter. The PAT was no good.

Rockwood’s first possession of the half was stopped on downs at the Midway 25, but the Tigers’ defense held the Green Wave to four plays and out.

The Tigers then drove 54 yards in six plays for a 33-19 advantage on Tre’ Falls’11-yard run with 5:10 left in the third quarter. Ashbury, Price, Brackett and Falls carried the ball for RHS.

Rockwood’s defense led by Hunter Henderson, McCain and Dade Turner held the Green Wave on downs at the Tiger 21-yard line.

The Tigers took over at the Midway 21, but were forced to punt seven plays later, giving the ball back to the Green Wave, which opened the fourth quarter in Rockwood territory trailing 33-19. Midway drove 38 yards in six plays to score on Taylor’s 3-yard and Velarde’s PAT to slice the gap 33-26 with 10:03 left in the game.

Rockwood then drove 49 yards in nine plays to take a 39-26 advantage with 6:23 left in the contest on Brackett’s 3-yard run. Tread way added the 2-point conversion for the 41-26 advantage. Falls, Brackett, Treadway and Ashburn carried the ball nine times for 48 yards.

Midway then drove 64-yards in five plays to slice the lead to 41-32 with 4:53 remaining. Velarde’s PAT made it 41-33.

After holding Rockwood to three-plays and out, Midway drove 40-yards in two plays to score on a 23-pass form Taylor to Moser with 2:48 left in the game. The PAT made 41-40.

The Tigers will travel to Sweetwater Aug. 25.
