“The Price was Right” for the Rockwood
Tigers Friday night, as senior Zander Price
picked off a pass by Midway quarterback
Jason Taylor to preserve his team’s 41-40
victory over Green Wave in the season opener
for both schools on Civitan Field.
Midway was driving for the potential winning
score in the final three minutes of the
game, after holding the Tigers to three
plays and out. Price returned Taylor’s pass
to the Midway 4-yard line, but a holding
penalty put the ball pack at the Tiger
36-yard line. Rockwood ran three running
plays to end the game for their first
victory of the season.
Rockwood scored on its first possession of
the game, driving 52 yards in nine plays to
score on Nate Brackett’s one-yard run with
8:34 left in the first quarter. Trey
Treadway’s PAT made it 7-0.
Midway’s first possession ended with a
30-yard punt by Hunter Mims. Price fielded
the ball at the Tiger 44-yard line.
Tiger then drove 56 yards in 10 plays,
capped by Caleb Bowen’s 6-yard run, but the
PAT was no-good. Brackets completed two pass
for 24 yards, a 13-yarder to Treadway and an
11-yarder to Dylan Williams for the 13-0
advantage with 2:05 left in the first
quarter.
Midway answered with a 15-play, 73-yard
drive, capped Taylor’s 6-yard pass to Hunter
Hester early in the second quarter. Taylor
completed 8-of-10 passes for 43 yards to
Robert Schommer, Zane Moser, Mims and
Hester. Gilbert Valarde booted the PAT.
Joe Asburn returned the ensuing kick to the
Tiger 36, where the Tigers drove the
distance in nine plays, capped on Brackets’
15-yard pass to Ryan McCain with 3:35 left
in the half for a 19-7 lead. The 2-point
conversion was no good.
Asburn, Carter Barnes, Bowen and Price
carried the pigskin eight times for 68
yards.
Midway took the ensuing kick at their 42 and
drove the distance in eight plays, capped by
Taylor’s 23-yard pass to Moser with 57.3
left in the half. Taylor was 5-of-7 passing
for 69 yards. Kaleb Garrett blocked the PAT
to make the score 19-13.
The Tigers drove 48 yards in three plays to
take a 27-13 advantage at the half, as
Brackett passed 11 yards to Price with 19.7
left in the half. He was 3-of-3 passes for
48 yards and scored the 2-point conversion
for the 27-13 lead.
Midway took the ensuing kick at their 42,
but Price was in the right spot at the right
time as picked off a Green Wave pass as the
first half ended.
The Green Wave started the second half by
driving 65 yards in seven plays to score on
Taylor’s 12-yard pass to C.J. Huff with
11:08 left in the third quarter. The PAT was
no good.
Rockwood’s first possession of the half was
stopped on downs at the Midway 25, but the
Tigers’ defense held the Green Wave to four
plays and out.
The Tigers then drove 54 yards in six plays
for a 33-19 advantage on Tre’ Falls’11-yard
run with 5:10 left in the third quarter.
Ashbury, Price, Brackett and Falls carried
the ball for RHS.
Rockwood’s defense led by Hunter Henderson,
McCain and Dade Turner held the Green Wave
on downs at the Tiger 21-yard line.
The Tigers took over at the Midway 21, but
were forced to punt seven plays later,
giving the ball back to the Green Wave,
which opened the fourth quarter in Rockwood
territory trailing 33-19. Midway drove 38
yards in six plays to score on Taylor’s
3-yard and Velarde’s PAT to slice the gap
33-26 with 10:03 left in the game.
Rockwood then drove 49 yards in nine plays
to take a 39-26 advantage with 6:23 left in
the contest on Brackett’s 3-yard run. Tread
way added the 2-point conversion for the
41-26 advantage. Falls, Brackett, Treadway
and Ashburn carried the ball nine times for
48 yards.
Midway then drove 64-yards in five plays to
slice the lead to 41-32 with 4:53 remaining.
Velarde’s PAT made it 41-33.
After holding Rockwood to three-plays and
out, Midway drove 40-yards in two plays to
score on a 23-pass form Taylor to Moser with
2:48 left in the game. The PAT made 41-40.
