A standing only crowd at Tom Pemberton Stadium Friday night saw the Rockwood Tigers' Class 2A playoff run end to the Tyner Rams, 16-10, capping a 10-4 season, which included an 8 game winning streak to send the Tigers into the semi-final round for the first time since 2009.
Rockwood started the game at their 20-yard line and moved the ball into Ram territory on the running of Ryan McCain, Zanderi Price and Joe Ashburn, picking up 38 yards on eight carries. After two incomplete passes and two penaltes, Trey Treadway booted a 31-yard punt.n
After a short punt return by Kevin Webb, Jeremy Elston and Tyon Young carried the ball five times for 23 yards, including a 1-yard run by Elston, with 5:35 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. Jaylen Bowens passed 41 yards to Jeremiah Batiste for a first-and-goal at the Tiger 1-yard line. The PAT made it 7-0.
Rockwood had two more first quarter possessions, picking up 11 yards rushing on five carries and was zero for one passing, while the Tiger defense held Tyner to a three and out. Tre' Falls, Dylan Williams, Kaleb Garrett and Caleb Bowen led the defensive effort, including a sack for minus eight yards by Garrett.
The Tiger's second possession of the first quarter ended on downs to open the second quarter. Tyner took over at the Tiger 14 and had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Luke Qualey with 9:28 left in the half for a 10-0 lead.
Rockwood's next posssesion ended with an interception by Bowens, but the Tiger defense held the Rams on downs at the Tiger 21-yard line.
The Tigers, again, used the running of Price and McCain to move the ball into Ram territory, picking up 38 yards on eight carries, but were forced to punt. Treadway booted a 49-yarder to put the Rams at their 20.
Three carries by Young and Elston for 48 yardsand 2-of-3 passes by Bowens for 32 yards put the ball at the Tiger 5-yard line. Qualey's field goal attempt was blocked by the center of the Tiger line and picked by Worthy who raced 80 yards for a TD as time expired in the half, as the Ram defenders looked on in dismay. After Worthy scored, flags were thrown for a sideline warning, but the score was allowed. Treadway booted the PAT to make the score 10-7.
A 15-yard penalty was assessed on the Tigers on the second half kick for illegal participation, caused by RHS players and coaches rushing on the field as the first-half clock expired.
Webb returned the second half kick 42 yards to the Tiger 23-yard line, but the Tiger defense led by Price, Bowen and Hunter Henderson held the Ram offense to zero yards rushing on four attempts, including a sack by Henderson. Bowens was 2-of-3 passing for 14 yards. Tyner was penalized three times for 20 yards.
After a couple of possession changes, the Tigers took over at their 31 and moved the ball on the ground to the Tyner 12-yard line. Nate Brackett passed 38 yards to Price for a big first down.
