Rockwood Races Past Hampton 45-14!

The Rockwood Tigers earned a berth in the Region 2A second round this Friday at Southern North, after they defeated Hampton 45-14 last Friday on Civitan Field at Tom Pemberton Stadium.

The Tigers used a devastating running attack, rushing for 454 yards on 39 carries, led by Joe Ashburn's 167 yards on seven carries with two touchdowns, Ryan McCain (149 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns) and Zander Price (112 yards on 11 carries. Caleb Bowen, Tre' Falls, Gavin Evans and Nate Brackett combined for 26 yards on 9 carries with 1 touchdown by Falls.
Brackett completed 6-of-8 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown to Trey Treadway, who had 2 catches for 37 yards. Price had one catch for 49 yards, McCain (one catch for 24 yards) and Dylan Williams (two receptions for 14 yards.
Hampton rushed for 268 yards on 44 carries, including 188 on 25 attempts by Hunter Davenport.

Hampton had the first position of the game, taking over at their 31-yard line, where Davenport and company moved the ball into Tiger territory. Davenport carried the ball three times for 24 yards, but the two tackles for minus 4 yards by the Tiger defense stopped the Bulldogs on downs at the Rockwood 27-yard line.

Brackett then hit Price for 49-yard pass for a first down at the Bulldog 24, where Ashburn raced into the end zone to give Rockwood a 6-0 lead with 8:48 left in the first quarter. Treadway's PAT made it 7-0.

At a personal foul on the Tigers on the ensuing kick, Hampton took over at the Tiger 45. Jason Russell and Davenport led the
Bulldog offense, moving the ball inside the Tiger 10-yard line. Russell completed 2-of-3 passes for 16 yards and rushed for 28 yards on five carries, while Davenport picked up 15 yards

The Tiger defense led by Tristan Tinker, Williams,John Metcalfe, Hunter Henderson and Falls stopped the Bulldogs on downs at the Rockwood 1-yard line.

Brackett handed the ball to McCain who exploded down the sideline for a 99-yard run and a 13-0 advantage. Treadway's PAT made it 14-0 with 2:27 left in the first quarter.

Hampton took over at their 48, where they picked up 44 yards on five rushes to move the ball to the Tiger 8-yard line as the first quarter ended.

Rockwood had only three offensive plays in the first quarter, picking up 123 yards rushing on two carries and 49 yards on the Brackett-to-Price pass. Hampton rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries and completed 2-of-4 passes for 16 yards.

Three plays later Davenport scored from 5 yards out to make the score 14-6. The 2-point conversion made it 14-8.
After a change of possessions, the Tigers took over at their 38 after a fumble recovery, using the running of McCain (4 carries, 30 yards) and Price (5 rushes, 34 yards) to take a 21-8 lead with 1:05 left in the half. Brackett passed 23 yards to Treadway for the score and Treadway's PAT.

Hampton finished the half with nine plays, 3 rushes for 34 yards and 2-of-6 passes for zero yards.
Rockwood's first drive of the second half was three plays and out, allowing the Bulldogs to take over at their 25 to move the ball into Rockwood territory, where a Bowen interception stopped the Bulldogs at their 6-yard line.

Three carries by McCain, Price and Bowen and a 17-yard pass from Brackett to Williams put the ball at midifield, where Ashburn rambled the rest of the way for a score, giving Rockwood a 27-8 lead with 50.6 seconds left in the third quarter. The PAT was no good.

Hampton took over at their 40, but Skyler Cole fumbled on the first play of the fourth quarter, with the Tigers' recovering at their 35-yard line.

After a penalty on the Tigers, Ashburn rambled 28 yards to the Hampton 42-yard line. Carries by McCain and Price put the ball at the Bulldog 25-yard line. Brackett passed 24 yards to McCain was stopped at the 1-yard line. McCain plowed his way into the end zone behind the center of the senior-laden offensive line for another score. The 2-point conversion was no good, but the Tigers led 33-8 with 8:54 left in the game.

Cole returned the ensuing kick 19 yards, but fumbled with Falls recovering for the Tigers.Two carries for 41 yards by Ashburn put the ball at their Bulldog 5-yard line, where McCain scored for a 39-8 lead. Again, the 2-point conversion failed.
Hampton took over at their 30, while Russell passed to Davenport for a 70-yard TD, but the conversion was no good, making the score 39-14 with 7:03 left in the game.

Falls capped a 5-play, 40-yard drive with a 2-yard run for a 45-14 lead with 4:17 left in the game. Price had a 37-yard run, while Ashburn raced 34 yards. Falls had another carry for two yards.

Hampton had two more possessions in the final 4:17, while Rockwood had one more series, allowing Coach John Webb and his staff to clear his bench.
