Rockwood Finishes the season strong with a 35-7 Win over Cumberland Gap

Game Summary By Ed Greif

Jayden Hannibal scored three touchdowns, two receiving and one rushing, to lead the Rockwood Tigers to a 35-7 victory over the Cumberland Gap Panthers to secure third place in Region 2-2A and a trip to South Greene for the opening round of the Class AA playoffs Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Tiger sophomore rushed for 77 yards on five carries with one TD and caught three passes for 79 yards with two scores to lead the Tigers (5-5, 2-2). He had plenty of help from Dakota Waldo (12 carries, 53 yards), Jack Alexander (6 carries, 39 uards with a touchdown), and Abe Gaskins (7 carries, 13 yards with one score). Nate Brackett completed 5-of-10 passes for 90 yards with three scores.Alexander had one catch for zero yards, and Xadrian Fickey had one reception for 11 yards, while Hannibal had three catches for 79 yards.

Brackett and Gavin Evans led the defense one interception each, while Fickey, Alexander, Dillon Garett and Eli Grant each recovered a fumble.
Rockwood wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, taking the opening kickoff at their 38 and going the distance in six plays to take a 6-0 lead on a 39-yard pass from Brackett to Jayden Hannibal; however, Ben Woodall missed the PAT with 9:37 left in the quarter.

The Panthers took a 7-6 lead on their second possession of the quarter, as Caden Brinisma passed 32 yards to Holten McDaniel for the score. The PAT was good for the lead. After a short kickoff return by Garrett, the Tigers over at their 40-yard line, the Tigers marched the distance in eight plays and scored on Brackett's 9-yard pass to J. Hannibal. Waldo scored the 2-point conversion for a 14-7 lead. Alexander had a 26-yard run, while Waldo carried three times for nine yards.

Cumberland Gap took over after the kick and ran one play before the first quarter ended. On the second play of the second quarter, Brackett picked off the Panther quarterback, but the play was nullified after three penalties were called - two on the Tigers and one on the Panthers.
Ethan Thomas fumbled on the next play when tackled by Alexander, with Fickey recovering Thomas' fumble at the Panther 20-yard line. J. Hannibal then raced into the end zone for the 20-7 advantage. Woodall's PAT made it 21-7.

Cumberland Gap used running and passing to move the ball into Tiger territory, another fumble, recovered by Alexander, stopped the drive at the Tiger 36 yard-line. Ten plays later, Gaskins scored from the 1-yard line for a 27-7 lead. Woodall's PAT swelled the lead to 28-7. Gaskins had 3 carries for 6 yards, while Waldo rushed for 22 yards on 4 carries. Brackett completed a 31-yard pass to J. Hannibal for a crucial first down.
Cumberland Gap ran out the clock to end the half.

Leading tacklers for the Tigers were Michaiah Story, Gaskins, Garrett, Fickey, Waldo, Evans, David Collett, Josiah Gilbert, J. Hannibal and P. Hannibal. The Panthers opened the second half at the 49-yard line, using four running plays before Brinsima completed 3-of-5 passes for 31 yards for a couple of first downs; however, a sack by Gilbert and Gaskins and three incomplete passes killed the drive.

Rockwood was held to three plays and out, but Brackett picked off a Brisima pass to regain possession of the ball for the Tigers.
Again, the Tigers were held to three plays and out, but Garrett recovered another fumble for his team at the Cumberland Gap 10-yard line; however, a 27-yard field goal by Woodall failed at the end of the third quarter.

The Panthers took over at the 20 after the failed attempt and went to the air, completing 6-of-7 passes for 55 yards, before an eighth pass was picked off by Evans and returned to the Panther 42-yard line. J. Hannibal raced 41 yards to the 1-yard line, where Alexander punched it into the end zone for a 34-7 lead. Woodall's PAT made it 35-7.

Grant's fumble recovery killed the Panther's final possession of the contest. Jeremiah Golliher, P. Hannibal, Alexander and Gaskins carried the ball on the ensuing possession to secure the victory.
