Coach John Webb's Rockwood Tigers tuned
up for Thursday's 2018 season opener at
Midway with a 7-0 victory over the Scott
High Highlanders in the annual Roane County
football jamboree at Nat Sugarman Field in
Kingston last Friday evening.
The Tigers scored on their first possession
of the quarter on a 17-yard pass from Nate
Brackett to Taj Bazel for the 6-0 lead. Ben
Woodall booted the PAT for the 7-0
advantage. Octavious Worthy carried the ball
twice for 16 yards, while Brackett was
2-of-3 passing for 38 yards.
The Tigers' defense held the Highlanders to
three plays and out on their first
possession, taking over at the Rockwood 45.
Rockwood ran four times for 8 yards and
failed to convert a pass, before punting
back to the Highlanders.
Scott took at their 18, taking to the air,
completing 5-of-9 passes for 45 yards, with
the ninth pass attempt being picked off by
Tiger defensive end Ryan Nelson.
Highlander quarterback Alex Rector hit
Daniel Hembree twice for 18 yards and
Grainger Smith three times for 27 yards,
while Dawson Branstetter carred the ball
once for six yards.
Rockwood took over at their 19 after the
interception and ran the ball four times for
one yard. Freshman Dom Simpson, Abe Gaskins
and Anthony Bell carried the ball to run out
the clock.
The Tigers rushed for 42 yards on 12 carries
and completed 2-of-4 passes for 38 yards,
while holding the Highlanders to 12 yards
rushing on two carries and 45 yards passing
on 5-of-11 passes with one interception.
